COLOURS AND FEELINGS PROJECT

Hi:

As I said in my last entry, I was looking at different blogs. The following activity is designed according to Sahman´s blog activity about emotions:

SAHMAN´S BLOG

My activity is called “Colours and feelings” and it is done for Infant Education (you can also use it in the first stage of Primary Education).

The activity is a book created with the tool “Storyjumper”.

I am going to explain how you can implement this activity in your class, as a part of a project called: COLOUR AND FEELINGS.

-       Firstly, you need to activate the vocabulary about colours and feelings. I am going to propose you, three songs and a game:

SONG 1: About feelings : If you are happy and you know it claps your hands (feelings)

IF YOU ARE HAPPY

With this song, you can prepare the vocabulary associated with feelings: happy, angry, calm, …

SONG 2: I see something blue

I SEE SOMETHING BLUE

SONG 3: I see something Pink

I SEE SOMETHING PINK

With these songs, you are going to review the colours linked with objects.

GAME: MATCHING SOCKS

I am a big fan of board games. There is a game that I love it: “El monstruo de los calcetines”, from “Haba games”. It consists of matching the socks that are from the same colour or with the same print. You can play cooperatively or competetively.

The first time that I used this game, I love the multiple possibilities you can find, so I decided to created one from my Infant Education classrooms:

We are sitting in a circle, and we need to roll up our trousers to show our socks.

There are two students that are choosen as “Monsters”, and these monsters have to catch children with socks of the colour said.

For example, we can use a dice with colours (you can buy in Amazon or any shop), a roulette (you can use the web WORDWALL to create one)…

We throw the dice and say aloud the colour: PINK! YELLOW!...

Our “Monsters” will find children with this colour in their socks.

They love this game!!!!

-       Secondly, we will start working with our book:

           STORYJUMPER BOOK

I recommend to work every day a colour from the book and make the following activities:

Identify the colours in our classroom and clothes.

Make a wallchart with different pictures or imgages about this colour.

Keep small things of this colour (blue, red, yellow…) in bottles to identify the feelings easily.

-       Thirdly, we are going to work with reading. There are some books that I recommend you about feelings and colours to complete this project:

                   The Colour Monster- Anna Llenas

The Day the Crayons Quit- Drew Daywalt

These two books are very useful and common in Infant Education. I personally adore the second one: it is an amazing story about the meaning of colours, tidiness, feelings, solving conflicts…

Feelings and Darlings collection: Camille Childs

The ABC´s of emotions

Color my emotions

This collection of books are amazing for working with emotions: you have pictures for colouring, card games, an alphabet of emotions…They are quite complete.

Be Kind- Pat Zietlow Miller

The feelings book- Todd Parr

For finishing, I recommend you these two books: The first one is a warm and lovely story about how can we hurt others with our actions, the second one is to complete my “storyjumper book” about colours and feelings.

TIMING

This project can be carried out in a term. Here you have an example:

SEPTEMBER:

Use the colours and feelings songs and the Storyjumper book to introduce the topic.

OCTOBER:

The Colour Monster: Make the bottles, play the game “Matching socks”…

NOVEMBER:

The Darlings Collection: Learning the Alphabet, colour the emotions…games, songs…

DECEMBER:

The Day the Crayons Quit:Working around this story: working the topic with Christmas: How I treat my toys and materials?

I hope you like this entry and you can use it in class or at home.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY!!

TWO BLOGS TO CONSIDER

Hello:

In this entry I´m going to analyze two blogs from my virtual mates of the course:

INNOVATIVE TEACHING PRACTICES SUPPORTED BY THE FOCUSED OF ICT TOOLS IN THE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM.

The first one is “Learning English with Sahman”:

https://learningenglishwithsahman.blogspot.com/

I´m amazed with this blog. From the top to the end is fantastic!! I mean, the colours, the presentation, the activities…I love it!!

The blog is quite complete. You can see all the activities from the course done, and this make me feel that the Blogger is a hard worker.

In the headboard, you can see his interactive classroom, which I like, because you can get some idea how is his classsroom asemmbled.

I read one by one all the activities, because I am really interested in every one. They are planned carefully and the most I like, is how he shows the way he evaluate. I can´t stop reading!!

The only issue I can mention is that maybe I would give the blog more colour to make it more attractive.

The second blog I want to analyze  is “Our English Learning Journey” by María:

https://maria-edublog.blogspot.com/

At a first sight, I love the blog because it is very colourful and the image from the back make me feel like I am in London.

The blog I have previously analyzed maybe is formal, considered for teachers, and this one, it could be useful for students and families too. The language and the distribution of the activities is easy to follow and they have big Windows with big pictures that make it special.

I like the activities, speacially the last one made with Edpuzzle. It is well created and structured.

Sometimes it is difficult for children to understand the “comparative and superlative adjectives”, but it seems pretty simple with this activity. I love it!!

If I have to say any disadvantage from the blog, maybe it is that it could have a little more information about the teacher, or maybe about other kind of activities she use to do.

PROJECT: LONDON TOUR WITH GENIALLY

Hello readers!!

Today, I am so excited to show you a big project that you can carry out in your class!!It´s being a success in my class and they are asking for more!!

First of all, I have to say that the project is a collaboration between teacher and students: I decided that LONDON was the central topic of that “speaking project” and they decided the activities we did.

I am going to explain you the project with all the steps that we followed. This project is designed for a class of 5th level of Primary Education but you can adapt it to your own class.

1.   PLANNING GROUPS

As you know, I love planning groups. I use a variety of games, technics and activities for it.

In this case they set up the pairs taking into account their MONTH OF BIRTH (it could be the same month, consecutive months,…)

2.  CHOOSING THE TOPIC AND THE ACTIVITIES.

I would like that my students were aware to the culture of the English speaking countries divertsity and at the same time, to review the different vocabulary and structures of the term.

For this reason, I have chosen LONDON as a central topic. Then, my hope is to design some others using IRELAND, CANADA, AUSTRALIA…

Later, we discuss in class different speaking activities, that we had done in the class during the term and they liked it. Everyone wrote one activity down a paper and we put it all together in a box.

At home, I read the papers and I classified them into categories or topics: TRANSPORTS, FAMILY, PREPOSITIONS, FOOD…

Next, I decided 5 activities (they will be challenges in our project), and they review all the vocabulary and structures of the term.

3.   MAIN AIM OF THE PROJECT

As a result of this process, I have created this project. The main objective of the project is to develop the speaking skill (mainly) through the use of dialogues, activities, games…

At the same time we will work the following objectives:

-       Foster cooperative work.

-       Know how to use the ICTs in a good way.

-       Develop creativity and imagination.

-       Look for information about the Royal Family.

The project reviews vocabulary and structures that we worked this term:

-          TRANSPORTS: ORDERING A TAXI

-          CITY: ORDERING AT A RESTAURANT

-          FOOD: SHOPPING LIST (VOCABULARY)

-          PREPOSITIONS: FIND DIFFERENCES

-          FAMILY: ROYAL FAMILY (VOCABULARY)

4.  TIMING

The project has plenty of timing uses:

-          You can use it as a review to finish the term.

-          You can use it as a review of the end of the year.

-          You can use it for an specific topic, working all the skills.

And, why is it so versatile? Because you can change the topics, the city, the activities…and adapt it to your class level.

We can divide the challenge in two sessions: one to prepare the activity and the second one to the explanations.

5.   LET´S START: NARRATIVE AND BREAK EDU

So, the project is created with the tool “Geniai.ly” which I love. It is one of my best discoveries of these years!!

It is a “digital tour” to know London. In this tour, I use a narrative to introduce the topic: My class and I travel to London and I get lost. My students need to complete 5 challenges to discover the place where I am.

The challenges are the activities that we previously selected from the box.

Every challenge is settled in a famous place of the city. With this situation, I want my students to learn about the city while they are working and having fun.

For example, the first challenge is established in “PICADILLY CIRCUS”.

If they click on “FIRST STOP: PICADILLY CIRCUS”, they watch a video tour walking in London to go to Picadilly.

If they click on the challenge, students would need to know how to order a taxi to go to the next place. If they do it well, they get a clue (two letters) that are related to the place where I am waiting for them.

To represent the dialogue, they can be dressed as a taxi driver, or as a waitress…depending on the task.

At the end of the project, if they complete correctly al the challenges, they will find me and they will get a “musical” surprise!!!

6.    EVALUATION

The evaluation of this project is based mostly in observation.

It is a review, so all this contents are evaluated yet. This activity should be useful for reinforcement, or as a way of improvement of the speaking skill.

I use an observation chart where I note down, how children are improving the speaking skill: the gestures, the intonation, the pronunciation, the creativity…

To summarize, I would like to say that I am happy and thankful to this tool. It allows you to create presentations, interactive games, interactive images, infographics…

In this particular case, it helps my students to be motivated and love learning English!!

They feel comfortable with the tool because it is easy to follow and they understand the tasks useful for their future.

This is the link to access to the project.
